Introduction about Ban Sanaypong and the Sri SuwanSanaypong Community Education Center

Address: Moo 1, TambonLaiwo, AmphorSangkhlaburi, Kanchanaburi Province

TambonLaiwo has six villages, all situating in the west of ThungyaiNaresuan Wildlife Sanctuary. The villages are linked with dirt roads, being accessible only during the dry seasons with 4WD.  During the rainy season, it’s only possible to travel on foot.

The closest village to AmphorSangkhlaburi office is Sanaypong Village, which is about 15 km, and 9 km to LaiwoSubdistrict Administrative Organization  (LSAO) office. The most remote village is Ja-gae, which is about 80 km.

Sanaypong Village has been here has been here for over 400 years. The current population is 734 living in 149 households. 99.9% of the population is Thai-Kareni.

Transportation

The distance from Bangkok to Sangkhlaburi is about 336 km, taking 5-6 hours by public van/bus. Traveling from the LaiwoSubdistrict Administrative Organization Office (LSAO)to Sanaypong Village would normally take half an hour with 4WD (in dry season) for 15 km. The route is partly steep. This is also accessible by motorbike. Travelling in rainy season is possible with motorbike as well, but only good for experienced riders.

An Education Overview of the Children Living in Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary

With the education road map it shows that every village has a school with sufficient capacity for children to attend school from Grade 1 to Grade 9.

However, these schools are remote. The distance between these schools and the Expansion Opportunity Schools (EOS) are very far (Gongmongta and Hintung schools). Coupled with the insufficiency of teachers in the EOS themselves, the education standards of the schools in these villages are undermined. In addition, one teachers have to take double or more of teaching classes at the same time, switching between elementary and junior-high classes. It has been also a problem where new teachers requesting to relocate due to hardship, resulting in the lack of educational continuation for the students.

After Grade 6 graduation, children are normally sent to join the Dek Ban Krai Project (Children who live in remote villages but want to attend school) so that they could further their education to Grade 7 and so on. Children from Ja-gae and Gongmongta Village whose attend their education at their villages will join the project when they prefer to proceed to Grade 10. These children would live in the accommodation provided at/by the LSAO. An LSAO will work as their advisor until they graduate from Udomsitsuksa High School in Sangkhlaburi.

Every year after graduation, new graduates will join the Dek Ban Krai Project (DBKP). In 2014 there were 32 students graduated from TamruatTrawen Chai DaenSunthonwetSchool (TTCDS) (school runs by Border Patrol Police or Tor Shor Dor School) joining the project.  This has made the project full of capacity to support more students any further because the accommodation cannot support more students, insufficient of lavatories, short of lunch budget supportfrom the LSAO, the limitation of transporting students to school (only one truck available), and the lack of staff to assist the students on daily issues.

To tackle these growing concerns the villagers in Sanaypong Village submitted a proposal to establish a Community Education Center in the village. This is legally allowed as any Community Organization has the rights to manage their own basic-level education system for their children.

Establishing a Community Education Center is thus the most obvious solution. Having the Center in the village will save a great amount of school fee, the children will not have to leave house to attend school at the early age away from parents’ supervision, and having their children accommodated away from home and live their lives at the LASO. It has come to mutual agreement of the village that they do not want their children to leave the village to attend junior-high school. It is more agreeable if their children can leave the village to attend Grade 10 as they will have maturity.

Community Education Center is the answer

There are two main reasons driving people in the Sanaypong Village to establish the Community Education Center, although having their major challenge in management skills and literacy.

Firstly, they wish to keep their children under parents’ supervisions

After graduating Grade 6 from the TTCDS the children have to seek higher education in AmphorSangkhlaburi which is 15 km away from the village.

The distance between the village and the Amphor is not the only concern. Sanaypong Village situates in the mountainous area and the dirt roads are rough for travel even for the 4WD to travel during rainy seasons. It is also hard to travel with a motorbike during the rainy season.

It’s thus obvious that having not to travel to school on the rough route will reduce risks associated with travelling in the woods, especially for girls. More to that, costs associated with education will also be reduced. Most of all, children will be raised under supervisions of their parents with their traditional ways of life and culture.

Secondly, Sanaypong villagers want their children to be educated under the way of the tribe. This would make their children proud of their culture and way of life. This can be seen as a parallel education where the children can learn about their culture and modern education at the same time.

Sanaypong Village is a Karenni community. The people have a very strong bond to their Karreni heritage. Although this community has been challenged with modern cultures, their 400 years bond keep their Karenni pride strength and allows them to live in harmony with nature.

The villagers strongly believe that having curriculum designed by the community members will determine the faith of the Karenni. Based on this notion, the curriculum will focus on knowledge of the Karenni origin, impacts of the modernization on their culture, and how to be self-aware of these changes.

Receiving education in the community in couple with a curriculum designed by the community members will teach the children the way of the Karenni as well as the modernization. They will learn how to harmonize the differences of the two worlds in order to live in their land proudly.

It is expected that in the future the Center will be the education center for children from other villages as well may they are interested in the ideology of this education.

Sanaypong Education Center

Accordingly to the law, a legitimated community organization has the rights to design their own curriculum for the basic education level (Grade 1 - 12). The curriculum that they have designed and proposed contains elements of Karenni aspects including culture, knowledge, and ways of life. This has been designed in line with the core curriculum designed by the Ministry of Education. This Center has been titled “Sri SuwanSanaypong Community Education Center”.

The curriculum proposal has been approved and the Center started their operation on 26th May, 2014. The Center is classified the same with other Public and Private schools.
